Ikea breaches of employment regulations

Employers in the UK who abide by employment and health and safety regulations and pay their staff a decent wage will be angered by the callous actions of Ikea towards truck drivers who work for a pittance in dreadful conditions delivering Ikea furniture across Europe. Ikea have suggested that they cannot keep track of their contractors and how they operate, but if small businesses can play by the rules then a company the size and resources of Ikea has no excuse.

Breaches of minimum wage regulations, Working Time Directives, health and safety…. the list is long, and flies completely in the face of Ikea’s proclaimed family values. Perhaps they should divert funds from their marketing budget to legal compliance and employee conditions, and then we would start to see a level playing field.

In the meantime, employers who treat their staff and contractors with respect can relax and congratulate themselves. If you have any queries about compliance or other legal obligations, contact us at 01225 632240 or email info@renneyandco.com.
